Yes. The kids who wore trousers for school uniform had to have black socks and I was perfectly fine with them going with socks of different lengths in slightly different shades of black but the school wasn't. I used to pay them 10p a pair for pairing the Post-Drying-Rack Sock Basket of Doom though.
