There is a tendency to underestimate the abilities of very small children.

At the other end of the technological scale, my younger daughter was only a few months older when she showed the ability at a Pick Your Own farm to select fruit and vegetables accurately at the right stage of ripeness, after being shown once. She even got maize right, which actually isn't easy. In a hunter-gatherer culture she would already have been a productive member of the community.
