the 366 meme, part twenty-four: June10-16
Jun. 16th, 2020 06:02 pmJun 10: What’s your favorite font? Comic Sans! Okay, more seriously (though I do like Comic Sans just fine, and it's not its fault that it's been overused in places it doesn't belong), I'm partial to Baskerville because of the name. There's an all-caps Gothic font whose name I've lost track of that's also great; it's used for the titles of the old Ellery Queen TV show.
Jun 11: If money were no object, but you could only choose one, would you rather travel somewhere via a first-class travel method or stay somewhere in a first-class accommodation? Depends on whether the alternative is non-luxurious but comfortable, or whether it's really uncomfortable. ("They don't serve food in ninth class.") If the less fancy method is still comfortable, I'd do first-class travel and second-class accommodation, because I'd still enjoy the destination without the hotel frills. If we're talking sheer hell, then I'd rather have the sheer hell on the travel but the actual destination be first class; then I'd still be satisfied with the trip as a whole.
Real life examples: My first trip to Europe, other than the five days I spent at my brother's apartment, had really uncomfortable accommodations. The hostels I stayed at ranged from tolerable to utter dump (plus the night I spent on an intercity train and had to deal with a creepy guy), and I spent the final night of the trip in Schiphol (where I ended up chatting most of the night with a young man from Manchester who looked scary and turned out to be delightful, which has left me predisposed towards the city ever since, but that's another story). It was an interesting trip, but pretty miserable, and I'd have been much happier with better food and a more comfortable lodging to nurse my cold in. On the other hand, my trip last year to Ottawa was excellent. Extremely comfortable AirBnB, plus lots of great food with family; the fact that I ended up getting stuck alone overnight in Toronto Pearson airport on our way home didn't ruin the trip. (And that's not a bad airport to be stuck in overnight, actually. The seats are comfy, and there's plenty of USB charging ports, and the people-watching in international arrivals is quite fun.)
Jun 12: What is your favorite place in your home? (Post a photo?) My desk in my room, despite the fact that I've spent 90% of my waking time there for the past three months. It's where I sit to surf the web, read, knit, spin, and write. (And no.)
Jun 13: What’s a popular vacation spot you have no interest whatsoever in visiting? Hmm. When I think of a spot and then look it up, I find that actually, I might find it a little interesting.
Jun 14: Who was your favorite teen heartthrob celebrity when you were a pre-teen? I can't remember having a celebrity crush as a pre-teen. The first celebrity I clearly remember crushing on was when I saw a magazine cover with a picture of filmmaker Ken Burns and immediately went LUST, and that was when I was thirty.
Jun 15: Do you prefer big parties or smaller, more intimate gatherings? In general, smaller gatherings. But I'd rather be at a big party where there's a bunch of people I know than a small intimate gathering where the only person I know is the host, especially if the other guests at the small gathering are already close friends.
Jun 16: If you had to create an alias or pseudonym for work purposes, what name would you use? Depends on whether my face is going to be connected with the pseud at all. If it is, my face is already out there connected with my real name for my current job, so I might as well not bother unless I'm going for something like Bored Metadata Wrangler. If I ever self-publish novels and don't do it under my legal name, I have a couple pseuds I'm tossing around using -- something along the lines of Lanier Smith if I want to present as gender-neutral; something like Lucy Elkins if I want to present as feminine.
