castironJul 15: How many cups of water have you drunk today? If I were in the office, it'd be the equivalent of six to eight. Working at home, I'm not drinking water; I'm drinking decaf tea, and I'm going through at least a pitcher a day, sometimes more.
Jul 16: When you were graduating from school, what did you think your life would look like at your age now? Does it match? Given that I thought I was going to be some kind of university faculty, it's very different in a lot of ways. But plenty of it would still be familiar to younger me. I'm still doing fibercrafts; I still write; I still do genealogy. I hoped to have a spouse and kids, and I do, though younger me would've assumed the kids would mostly be grown by now. And I still have a job that's connected to academia.
Jul 17: Do you prefer pie or cake? Yes.
Okay, it depends on the pie and the cake. Pie might win out. But a really good chocolate or vanilla or pound cake is a delight, and so is a really good fruit pie or chocolate pie. (Pause to mourn the chocolate silk pie that was my birthday staple for many years until the restaurant closed.)
Jul 18: When you eat out alone, where do you like to go? It's been changing over the past few years, even before the pandemic. My workplace's old location had a lot of great restaurants nearby, and I'd often walk to lunch. The new location doesn't have nearly as good a restaurant selection close by, and my two favorites closed in the past year. There are still restaurants I like to go to -- a longtime favorite TexMex place; a sushi and noodle place; an Italian place that does an amazing basil pesto fettucine, a sandwich place whose carrot and cheese soup is a delightful treat and who has the best cinnamon rolls in town -- but I don't spontaneously eat out as often as I did a few years ago.
The other factor affecting my eating out is prices rising faster than my salary. I still consider eating out a worthwhile luxury, but when I'm paying $16 rather than $8 for lunch, that food had better be fabulous or give me large enough portions that I can box up leftovers for lunch the next day. I've mostly stopped going to one of the few restaurants near my workplace because prices increased to where I couldn't justify the cost for how much I liked the food I was getting.
Jul 19: Are you more of a “work hard” or “play hard” kind of person? Neither. I'm a "fantasize hard" kind of person. I imagine something fun that I can't do but would rather be doing instead of the work I need to do or the play that's available.
Jul 20: Do you think morality and ethics are absolute or situational? Yes. I think there is an absolute morality that is extremely complicated and unfathomable by humans because none of us see more than a tiny percent of the picture, so we have to do the best we can in the moment with the guidelines we have.
Jul 21: Would you rather relax in a hot tub or a sauna? Hot tub. My one experience with a sauna felt like I was drowning without actually being in the water.
