Dear Yuletide Entity:

My general preferences are largely unchanged. I like happy or at least hopeful endings. I'm usually okay with slash, het, or gen; I'm not crazy about 'cest. Gore and graphic violence are squicks; I'd rather not read about any non-con sex that isn't in the source material.

Specifics:

"John Barbour", song: The version I'm familiar with is done by Great Big Sea. (There's currently a video of GBS performing the song on Youtube, thought the sound quality stinks.) The entire reason I want a fic for this is the line where the king says of John Barbour "If I were a woman as I am a man/ my bedfellow he would be" -- that just cries out for a slashy story.

Alexandre Dumas, Count of Monte Cristo: Still desperately wanting a happy ending for Mercedes. I love this book deeply, but every time I reread, I find myself annoyed about the standard Mercedes is held to, and I want to see her find new hope, love, etc. I want her to be like Ista in Bujold's Chalionverse, receiving grace unlooked-for. That said, it's up to you what form that new hope takes, whether it's the love of God or a hot young man or an unexpected talent.

Maud Hart Lovelace, Betsy-Tacy series: I love the whole series and am open to a variety of stories. One possibility that particularly interests me is Betsy after the end of WWI -- does Joe survive? if he survives, does he wish he hadn't? do they ever have Bettina? For this scenario, a downbeat setup works for me, but I'd still want Betsy to be looking towards the future with hope at the end. I also adore Emily from Emily of Deep Valley and would be happy to read a story about her and Jed's marriage. But overall, any character's fine. Do you want to tell the story of Tony's acting career? Write about Tib's 50th birthday in the middle of WWII? Tell about some prank Winona played in high school? Go for it! (Note: I requested both Betsy and Emily as characters; it's fine if their appearances aren't in scenes, though -- if someone receives a letter from one or the other, or remembers something they did in school, or reads a newspaper article about Emily's activism or a review of Betsy's book, that's sufficient mention for me.)

Elizabeth Enright, The Melendy Family books. Again, I love the whole series, and anything's good. Some possibilities: What's Cuffy's backstory? Is there a referred-to event that isn't described in the book but deserves to have its story told? What are the Melendys like as adults? (Note: This is a fandom where I'd be okay with a mildly incestuous story if it involved Mark and one of the other kids, but definitely not anything between the blood relatives.)

Thank you very much for whatever you come up with!
