February 5. What is your take on organ donation? When I'm dead, take everything that's usable. I support an opt-out system where everyone is assumed to consent to after-death organ donation unless they have documentation on file indicating otherwise.

Live donor organ donation, now, I'm iffy about. I'm a regular blood donor and would have no problem with donating bone marrow, but those grow back. I'm not sure there's anyone other than my children who I'd consider donating a kidney to; possibly one friend who loaned me a four-figure sum when I had a gap between funds being due and the bank loan to pay it coming through. And I'm concerned, though unsurprised, that the gender split on live kidney donors is 60% women / 40% men.

6. What do you think about hunting? Hunting for food? I'm completely fine with that; it's more ethical than my eating burgers from factory-farmed cows. Hunting for animal population control because all the predators are gone or because it's an invasive species? Acceptable. Hunting for trophy purposes? Neutral to negative, depending on how abundant the species is. Having someone round up an animal in a pen so you can shoot it and brag about having shot it? That's not hunting, that's weenie-waving.

7. What places are you really grateful exist? Setting aside the obvious like "earth as a whole because otherwise I wouldn't be here" -- I'm grateful for places suitable for mass growing of food so I can eat. I'm grateful for my house. If the question is more "places that you love so much you're glad they exist", right now I'm not feeling that way about any places, but maybe that'll change when travel's possible again.

8. What does it mean to you to be spiritual? "Spiritual" makes me think of how a lot of people used to say "I'm spiritual but I'm not religious", meaning they believe in some higher power/deity/etc. but don't subscribe to an organized religion.

9. Do you believe things happen for a reason? Yes, but sometimes that reason is "pure coincidence".

10. What is your take on making mistakes? They happen; we're not perfect beings. Ideally, people would be able to make mistakes, learn from them, fix things as best they could, and move on. In practice, one of the indicators of having particular kinds of privilege is how severe of a mistake you can make and still recover from it.

11. Who would you like to trade lives with for a day and why? Someone who lives alone in a modest but comfortable home and has a really nice home office with a view.
