Catching up....

April 9. How often do you get hiccups? Every few months? I can't remember when I last had them.

10. What’s the most beautiful place you’ve ever seen? So many, but the place that hit me hardest when I first saw it was Salt Lake City.

11. Are you more sensitive to heat or the cold? Cold.

12. What’s the most historic thing that has happened in your lifetime? 9/11 or the Covid-19 pandemic, take your pick.

13. What brand are you most loyal to? Inglenook Fibers. I know that any fiber I buy from them will be well prepped and artistically dyed.

14. What’s the most awkward thing that happens to you on a regular basis? I'm in a group conversation and realize that I have not said a word for twenty minutes.

15. What do you think could be done to improve the media? Define "improve" -- make it more accurate? make it less partisan? make it less dependent on big corporate interests/big government/big anything? break up the monopolies? pay journalists better? have more in-depth investigative stories and less panic-of-the-second? lessen the effect of outright falsified "news" stories?

And the answer to any of these is, I have no clue. I think the fundamental problem is funding, especially now that free news of varying quality and accuracy is available to anyone with an internet connection. (Then again, free news was available fifty years ago to people in big cities who had a radio or a television, so there's almost certainly other factors.) I don't know how to fix media funding in a way that doesn't end up with all the accurate news locked behind a paywall and leave the freely accessible stories to people with an axe to grind. I mean, look at me, a well-educated American adult -- twenty-five years ago I had a newspaper subscription (and routinely read it over breakfast); ten years later, I'd cancelled it, partially because I didn't have time to read it but partially because my finances were tight and the subscription made sense to drop because I was getting news elsewhere. So how do you get someone like me to contribute money to news reporting? (Especially since I now avoid most news, because the past several years have completely fried my ability to cope with it?)
