Aliette de Bodard, Servant of the Underworld. Fantasy/mystery set in the Aztec Empire; a death priest whose brother is accused of murder seeks for the actual killer. Great worldbuilding, and while this being the Aztecs there is a lot of sacrifice of animals and occasional humans, the details aren't dwelt on, so I was able to read it without having horrible mental images for the next three weeks. (YMMV.) I'm now reading the sequel, Harbinger of the Storm.
