Via [personal profile] oursin and [personal profile] legionseagle, that food meme.

Have you ever...

1. Made biscuits from scratch? Yes. Joy of Cooking's biscuit recipe was one of the foods I lived on in college. (A college friend was appalled that I made my biscuits with butter and my chocolate chip cookies with shortening instead of the other way around as God intended.)
2. Fried fresh okra? I think not by the most technical definition of frying, though I have certainly cooked okra in a skillet.
3. Made sourdough bread? No. I like my breadmaking arrangements to be casual flings, not long-term commitments.
4. Fried chicken? Not in the sense meant by this. I have cooked chicken pieces in oil in a pan, but I've never made true fried chicken, at least in the southern U.S. sense.
5. Made spaghetti sauce from scratch? As in started with fresh tomatoes? No.
6. Made any kind of yeast bread? Yes.
7. Baked a cake from scratch? I'm not actually sure.
8. Made icing from scratch? Yes. Buttercream is really easy to make and tastes so much better than the canned stuff.
9. Cooked a pot roast with all the veg? Like potatoes, carrots, and onions? I'm pretty sure I've done it once.
10. Made chili from scratch? No.
11. Made a meatloaf? I think so, but I can't remember for sure.
12. Made scalloped potatoes? No.
13. Made mac/cheese from scratch? No.
14. Made a jello salad? No.
15. Made peanut brittle? No.
16. Made fudge? Yes.
17. Made cookies from scratch? Yes. This is the one cooking skill I learned when my age was in single digits.
18. Cooked a pot of beans from dried beans? Yes.
19. Cooked a pot of greens? Technically, though not in the southern U.S. sense.
20. Made cornbread from scratch? I don't think I have, though I think Spouse did once.
21. Made a pie dough from scratch? Yes.
22. Cooked a whole turkey? Yes.
23. Snapped green beans and cooked them? Yes.
24. Made mashed potatoes from scratch? Yes.
25. What’s the most people you have (alone) prepared a whole meal for? Eight? I cooked Thanksgiving dinner for some friends of a friend in college, but I don't remember exactly how many folks that was -- high single digits.
26. Poached an egg? No.
27. Made pancakes from scratch? Yes, and these days that's the only way I'll make them; a mix doesn't save enough time to be worth it.
28. Roasted vegetables in the oven instead of boiling them? I don't boil vegetables unless there's a larger recipe that specifically calls for that. But I don't roast them often either, except in winter. If I'm cooking veggies, it's steamed or sautéd.
29. Made fresh pasta? No.
30. Made croissants from scratch? No.
31. Made tuna salad? Yes.
32. Fried fish? In the breaded-and-fried sense, no. (Come to think of it, in the cooked-in-oil sense, no.)
33. Made baked beans? No. I've never liked baked beans, so no sense in learning to make them.
34. Made ice cream from scratch? Yes, many many years ago.
35. Made jam or jelly? No.
36. Zested an orange or lemon? No.
37. Made grits from scratch? No.
38. Made an omelette? Yes.
39. Lived in a house without a dishwasher? House, no; apartment, yes.
40. Eaten a bowl of cereal for supper? Yes, though I'd be more likely to fix a bowl of popcorn if I were going for the all-grain meal.

I agree with them that this is an extremely American-centric food meme, and an east-of-the-Missisippi meme at that (no "have you ever made tacos?" or "have you ever made tamales?"[yes; no] for starters). I'd love to see the versions of this meme for other foodways.
