Sep 23: What’s your favorite Elton John song, and why? "I'm Still Standing". Thinking about this question, I don't actually like a lot of his songs; I recognize them as well-written music, but they're rarely songs I'll go out of my way to listen to. His Muppet Show episode was awesome, though.
Sep 24: If you could choose any animal as a pet (all problems aside), which one would you have and why? Given the "all problems aside" qualifier? Elephant, though I'd have to have more than one to keep her happy and sane. It would be interesting to spend a lot of time with an animal that intelligent and learn what she likes to do with her time. (My second choice would be an octopus. In the incredibly unlikely event that I ever become obscenely rich, one of my plans is to build an octopus habitrail into my mansion, with clear tubes through all the rooms and sundry tanks for the octopodes to hang out in and a couple of full-time employees to manage the actual keep-the-octopodes-alive details.)
Sep 25: What’s something “everyone” knows how to do that you’ve never actually done? Get seriously drunk? I mean, I know how to do that, but the most I've ever drunk in an evening is two average-strength drinks with at least an hour between them. When I'm out with other people, I've never felt safe enough to go beyond lightly tipsy and cheerful, and when I'm at home, I'm setting an example for kids.
Sep 26: What’s one small thing you’ve accomplished today that wasn’t even on your to-do list? Juggling three overlapping Zoom events with only two computers available.
Sep 27: If you could eliminate one thing from your daily schedule, what would it be? Again, does "work" count?
Sep 28: Is there a book or TV series that you enjoy, but acknowledge that it's not actually very good? What makes you love it enough to keep reading/watching? I love Patricia Kennealy Morrison's Aeron trilogy (The Copper Crown, The Throne of Scone, The Silver Branch) with a deep and abiding passion. Objectively, the series has a lot of problems. You can tell whether someone's good or bad by whether they like Aeron, and even her enemies secretly admire her -- there are few shades of gray here. There is extreme and likely problematic romanticization of Celtic cultures. The internal chronology doesn't work, especially in ToS. And nonetheless, I adore the trilogy. Aeron is such a fun character.
Sep 29: If you were your own best friend, what piece of unsolicited advice would you give yourself? Stop pre-rejecting yourself; make the other person/organization/entity do the work.
