the 2021 daily meme, week 3

January 15. What’s the biggest challenge in your life right now? The same one I've had since I first had children: I have no predictable large chunks of time alone, particularly alone at home. Before the pandemic I was at least starting to get some time at the university library to write for a couple of hours a week, but once the pandemic closed things down, that was gone.
16. Think about a job you hated. What did you learn from it? That management is a huge factor in job satisfaction. I worked at a copy shop chain for a while in two different locations. One had pretty decent management, and while I wouldn't have wanted to make a career there, I felt appreciated and was getting good training. The other had horrible management, and the job became more and more miserable; they finally got a decent manager, but by then I was hugely motivated to get out of there.
17. What’s your favorite way to spend a Friday night? Pre-pandemic, going to folk dance. Currently, having the kids and spouse go to bed relatively early so I can stay up and read and knit and spin and if I'm lucky write.
18. What’s your least favorite room in your house? The living room. Perpetually cluttered because it's not my stuff to decide on; I can get some of it picked up, but I can't properly make space. (This is actually true of most of my house. My bedroom is the only room that's completely under my control; yes, it's also cluttered, but at least I can get rid of things without getting someone else's buy-in first. And it's in way better shape than the rest of the house.)
19. What life lessons are you most grateful for? I'm not really sure how to answer this; most things that I would consider life lessons, I would rather not have had to learn, because they can be summarized as "people can really suck".
20. What’s your least favorite chore? It used to be dishes. I've learned, though, that it's not the washing of dishes I dislike; it's the cleaning out the sink so I can get started, and the rinsing and drying or finding space on the drying rack for them. Give me the basin of hot soapy water and someone to deal with the post-washing processing, and I'll get through the pile on the counter cheerfully.
Now I'd say my least favorite chore is anything that involves twenty minutes of shoving stuff around or hunting down necessary tools and supplies before I can do the actual chore.
21. Name someone you met through work. How is your life better for knowing them? Not naming them for their privacy, but they make my life better by being someone who I know will be positive and suppportive when I say "I'm thinking of doing such-and-such". They're an absolute delight to know, and I'm glad to have them in my life even though they left my workplace years ago.
